What to See in Bologna in 2 Days
A two-day itinerary in Bologna taking in Piazza Maggiore, porticoes, markets, museums and flavours, starting from our apartments in the historic centre.
Day One: The Monumental Heart
Begin at Piazza Maggiore in the morning, when the light catches the brick façades of the palazzi and the city is still quiet. Step inside the Basilica of San Petronio, look out for Cassini’s sundial, then cross into Piazza del Nettuno. From here it is just a few minutes to the Quadrilatero, the city’s ancient market quarter: among small shops, stalls of fresh pasta and the scent of cured meats, it becomes clear why Bologna is nicknamed “la Grassa”, the fat one. Our apartments and suites are just steps away, so you can experience this part of the city without fixed schedules and return for a break whenever you like.
The Two Towers and Santo Stefano
Continue toward the Two Towers along Via Rizzoli. The Torre degli Asinelli is Bologna’s vertical symbol; even when climbing it is not possible, the square around it remains one of the most striking spots in the centre. Carry on along Strada Maggiore to the Santo Stefano complex, a cluster of churches, courtyards and cloisters that invites you to slow down. In the afternoon, walk beneath the UNESCO-listed porticoes: they are not just shelter, but the most authentic way to read the city, noticing doorways, courtyards and small shops as you pass.
A Bolognese Evening
For dinner, head back to the Quadrilatero or explore the trattorias between Via del Pratello and the Mercato delle Erbe. Order tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini in broth or a Bolognese-style cutlet, choosing places that work with local produce. After dinner, Piazza Santo Stefano and the streets around Piazza Maggiore are lovely for an evening stroll. Staying in the historic centre means you can linger without worrying about transport or parking, and be back in your suite within minutes.
Day Two: Art and Views
Devote the morning to the Archiginnasio, with its Anatomical Theatre and courtyard of coats of arms, then choose a collection that matches your interests: the Pinacoteca Nazionale for Emilian painting, Palazzo Pepoli for the city’s history, or MAMbo for contemporary art. For a different perspective, climb toward the Sanctuary of San Luca along the longest portico in the world. If you would rather stay on level ground, the Giardini Margherita offer a green break close to the centre.
Lunch, Historic Shops and Final Views
Before leaving, take time for the historic shops. Buy fresh pasta, mortadella or baked goods to bring home, always checking storage and travel guidelines. A light lunch at the Mercato di Mezzo leaves room for one last coffee under the porticoes.
