What to Do in San Candido in Winter and Summer
A guide to San Candido and the Dolomites: Baranci skiing, Tre Cime, Lago di Braies, walks and cycling in every season.

San Candido, a Base for the Dolomites
San Candido combines the intimate character of an alpine village with services you can reach on foot. From the centre you can head up to Monte Baranci, travel along the Val Pusteria by train or bus, and plan days out at Tre Cime, Lago di Braies and Val Fiscalina. Casa Horvais sits close to the main street and has a terrace looking onto the mountains: an independent base for families and travellers who want to experience the area at their own pace.
Winter: Skiing and Snow on Baranci
The Baranci ski lifts are about 200 metres from the house, making them the most convenient way to start the day. The slopes are popular with families and with anyone looking for pleasant runs close to the village. Snow conditions and lift opening dates change throughout the season, so it is always worth checking official updates. After skiing you can leave your gear in the dedicated storage room and return to a warm apartment with a kitchen and space to gather together.
Winter Walks and Village Atmosphere
You don’t need to ski to enjoy winter here. Groomed trails, snowshoe walks and the area’s cross-country ski tracks reveal quiet landscapes and snow-covered valleys. Val Fiscalina is one of the most striking settings, while the centre of San Candido invites you to linger among cafés, pastry shops and stores. During the festive season, local markets and events add extra atmosphere; always check dates and times before visiting.
Summer: Tre Cime and Lago di Braies
In summer the possibilities grow. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are an iconic destination and call for good planning, especially on busier days. Lago di Braies may also involve regulated access or bookings: setting off early helps you enjoy these places more peacefully. For something closer, the trails on Monte Baranci offer paths, viewpoints and activities suited to families too.
Cycling Along the Drava
The Drava cycle path is one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the area. The route toward Lienz crosses villages and open countryside, with the option of returning by train depending on the service available. Mountain bikers will find routes of varying difficulty in the side valleys. Casa Horvais has space for bicycles, so you can plan your outings with more freedom and keep your equipment safely stored.
When to Visit and Where to Stay
Winter is ideal for snow and alpine atmosphere; summer for trekking, cycling and long days. Spring and autumn are quieter, though some lifts and services may pause seasonally. A Ferienwohnung in Innichen, or an apartment in central San Candido, lets you prepare breakfast, work around children’s schedules and come and go as you please. Casa Horvais is a holiday home in the Dolomites with two bedrooms and a terrace, designed for independent stays in every season.
